Strangely Addictive

I've never eaten first thing in the morning...I'm not big on breakfast & rarely have a meal until my venti black americano has been consumed in its entirety (only having been re-heated 25 times or so over the morning). But, on not so uncommon occasions, I have been known to go from not hungry at all to starving & shaky the next second. Cue extreme crankiness, irritability & the need to eat immediately.

We recently road tripped to a wedding in Columbus, OH, and I was concerned about having enough to eat without being the most annoying, high maintenance visitor ever. I decided to hit the Green Grocer before & stocked up on almond butter packets, celery sticks, raw bars, nuts, falafel chips & nori. Nori is seaweed, most commonly had in sushi, but I prefer the stuff in sheets, roasted w/salt & olive oil or wasabi. I've had a hard time finding a version I like that doesn't involve a trek to mitsuwa market, but figured it was worth a shot.

Thank goodness I did, because SeaSnax are where it's at. Obviously they score highly due to their 'mother earth' values, but the real reason they are the shite is they taste amazing. Just ask the passengers in the car who happily chomped away with me. They come in a variety of flavors (although, the chipotle & garlic didn't taste much different than the olive oil), & are available in snack packs or in giant sheets. Virtually fat-free, low-cal & high in minerals, these make the best snack...plus they're guaranteed to spark conversation. My favorites are the olive oil & the wasabi & as my fascinated client from Mexico commented after trying it, 'they're just like Lays, you can't eat just one'. Strangely addictive indeed.

the drop of a hat

Excited to share some photos from a shoot we did for the fabulous Emika Graden Designs! Kathy Gaffey is the designer behind the brand; each luxurious piece is hand crafted & custom-made using fabrics & materials that inspire her creations. Kathy creates one-of-a kind hats, in addition to funky accessories including jewelry, bags & one of my favorite pieces, a hand-warmer created from a vintage fur. It was nearly impossible to pick a favorite, but ultimately it was the black hat in the first image (aptly nicknamed 'stevie nicks' by brian)...it's sure to be a hit on the festival circuit this summer!

Make sure to check out the rest of her designs at their website, here, and like them on facebook, here!

FleaBags + VPL

Seeing as how my social media was blowing up in smoke yesterday in honor of 420, today I decided to do my part to stimulate the economy & celebrate Earth Day a day early at p.45.  Truth be told...I fell for this backpack the moment I put it on, finding out it's made of eco-friendly materials & vegan leather was an added & thrilling bonus.

This picture doesn't do the bag justice, it's slouchy & hangs in a unique way, perfect for trips to the farmer's market (which went outdoors yesterday...amid snow) in addition to everything else a backpack is useful for, saving disposable bags left & right. I will do a post wearing it soon, but my photographer is on a shoot today & that takes precedence over his pro bono blog work. I suppose it's only fair.

I got lucky because I love to spend time in the kitchen and Brian happens to be a really great cook/smoothie & juice maker/griller/chopper, etc...he is way more patient than I am & his diced vegetables always come out perfectly uniform. This weekend though we realized where he really shines is at 'bowl things'. Aka things that work well with a dipper of some form. His salsas never last long (except when he maxes out on habaneros & burns my tongue right off) & his hummus is smooth, creamy & nice & garlicky.

Brian's Hummus
Juice of 2 lemons
2 cloves peeled garlic (3 if you want it extra garlicky)
2 tsp tahini
Couple dashes cumin
Couple dashes cayenne
1 can garbanzo beans with 1/4 can juice

Blend together in a food processor & drizzle w/olive oil & a few dashes paprika for garnish (optional)

Serve w/pita chips, lentil chips, cucumber, celery or over a veggie burger!
